Workshops and demonstrations

"had such a great day, I didn't want to stop"

Clare runs lino cut print making workshops. At present these take place three times a year at Higham Hall College near Cockermouth in the Lake District. The residential courses last for four days, including three nights accomodation and all meals. There are only eight students in each class so that they all get plenty of attention. There is time to make lots of work, and to experiment with colour as well. All tools and equipment supplied.

The ink I use on my course is a water based printing ink: Schmincke Aqua Linoprint 120ml tube at about £14.00 each. You can buy a starter set of five 35ml tubes for about £22.00 available from www.jacksonsart.com . You will also need a tube of Schmincke Linoprint Glaze for added transparency.

My choice of Schmincke colours:

  • Permanent Yellow

  • Cyan Blue

  • Carmine Red

  • Titanium White

  • Ivory Black

Additional equipment : small palette knives and a piece of plate glass

[ Students can use a PVC lino substitute that is easier for beginners to cut: Easy cut lino from www.dryadeducation.co.uk/art/printing/relief-printing ].

Jacksons also sell the Speedball soft rubber rollers 4 cm and 10 cm, and the Pfeil tools.

The ink that I use myself is Lawrence Original Linseed Oil Relief Ink 75 ml tubes, which cost about £10.00 each.

I use traditional flooring lino bought by the linear metre: Forbo Linoleum Marmoleum Walton ‘Cement’ 2.5mm www.forbo.com/flooring/en-uk/ to find a local flooring supplier who will supply you, and will cut the lino to size. Degrease with meths.

Warming Plate

Lino is much easier to cut if it is slightly warm. A simple warming plate set at the right temperature for lino cutting is now available from

www.pecoservices.co.uk

measures approx 150mm x 150mm x 30mm, costs approx £40.00
