Postage stamps for Royal Mail
In 1999, to mark the millenium, a set of 48 stamps was issued. A major project of public art, interpreting the past 1,000 years of British history.
Clare was commissioned to design the 1st. class Christmas stamp, depicting James I/VI who was responsible for publishing the Authorised Version of the bible. He appointed a panel of translators and scholars to translate from the Latin and Hebrew and Greek, correcting past errors. Now anyone who could read English, could read the bible for themselves.
The next four stamps, below, were issued in 1997, celebrating the arrival of Christianity in Britain: St Augustine arriving at Canterbury in 597 AD, and St Columba’s mission in Scotland.
The final section, below, shows the four British saints: St. Andrew of Scotland, St. Patrick of Ireland, St. George of England, and St. David of Wales. These commemorative stamps were issued in 2006/7/8/9.
